Oakland Nature Preserve’s Beneath the Surface: An Adventure in Ocean Literacy

  • When: Wednesday, May 6, 2026,  5:00 pm -  6:00 pm
  • Location: Oakland Nature Preserve: 747 Machete Trail Oakland, FL 34760

Beneath the Surface is the first novel in the Blue Marble Series, and follows 11 year old Xing Xing into the South China Sea after she discovers a special power that allows her to connect with ocean life. The new series takes readers deep below sea level through both fantasy and fact. Enjoy a reading from author Carissa Welton, who found her writing inspiration SCUBA diving in Asia and mentoring Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots groups in China. In addition to the reading, guests will have a chance to interact with the story through interactive and collaborative activities.

This special event is geared towards middle grade readers, ages 10-13, and siblings ages 6-9 are also welcome.
