Join us for Peru Independence Day! Come learn about Peruvian culture and heritage. The Raymi Dance School will present Sarawja, a documentary which captures and celebrates Sarawja, a musical practice performed in the Ticsani Valley, Moquegua region of Peru followed by traditional dances performed by the school. This event is FREE! Developed by Pedro Roel and David Salamanca, this documentary invites viewers into the heart of Sarawja—a joyful musical tradition shared by the communities of Carumas, Cuchumbaya, and San Cristóbal-Calacoa in the Ticsani Valley of southern Peru’s Moquegua region. Told through the voices of those who keep the tradition alive, the film highlights Sarawja’s vibrant role in community life.
The name Sarawja, derived from the Aymara phrase for “I’m leaving,” reflects the journey of connection and celebration that takes place during the week after Holy Week. In honor of Christ’s resurrection, families form music and dance troupes to visit friends and relatives across the valley. Their hosts greet them with local products in a spirit of hospitality and, in a powerful act of reciprocity, later join their own troupes to return the visit—keeping the rhythm of shared tradition in motion.
Declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2010, Sarawja continues to bring thousands together each year in a dynamic expression of identity, faith, and joy.
